Magnitude 7.7 quake off New Caledonia triggers tsunami warning in South Pacific
A tsunami threat is when a large earthquake occurs and there is a possibility of a tsunami.

On Friday, a 7.7-magnitude tsunami was felt in countries of the South Pacific after it struck south of the Loyalty Islands on the French territory New Caledonia.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued potential tsunami warnings for Vanuatu and Fiji, as well as New Caledonia. Australia's Meteorology Bureau also warned of a possible threat to Lord Howe Island, off the east coast.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth between 38 km and 24 miles.
