At 23, a professional surfer named Becca Speak had a life-altering experience when she sustained a serious head injury during a surf competition. The injury left her unable to speak and caused delayed speech and overstimulation. She was later diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Speak underwent months of physical and cognitive therapy, as well as neurological treatments and rehabilitation, to recover. Her story is chronicled in a new film called “Beyond Normal.” The film aims to raise awareness about the impact of brain injuries, especially concussions. Despite the challenges, Speak has returned to surfing with a foam helmet and is pursuing her goals with determination.
