Europe Slashes Tariffs for Tesla Vehicles Made in China

The European Union proposes an additional tariff of 9 percent on Tesla vehicles imported from China, while other automakers could face rates as high as 36.3 percent. The aim is to protect European producers from unfair competition and level the playing field with Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. The proposed tariffs are in addition to the existing 10 percent charged for EVs produced in China. Tesla’s rate was lowered from a proposed 21 percent due to the company not benefiting from similar subsidies as leading Chinese automakers. Tariffs for Chinese automakers range from 17 percent to 36.3 percent for a period of five years.
