An ongoing excavation in Damietta, Egypt has uncovered 63 tombs from over 2,500 years ago. The tombs contained a collection of gold artifacts, coins, and pottery. The artifacts provide insight into the burial practices and trade in the ancient Egyptian civilization. The excavators found funerary amulets, ushabti statues, and bronze coins from the Late Period. The site known as Tal al-Deir served as a necropolis and was important during the 26th Dynasty and subsequent eras. The excavation also revealed a large tomb holding burials of individuals with high social status. The discoveries shed light on the wealth and status of those buried in the necropolis.
