A man from Massachusetts has successfully undergone a groundbreaking larynx transplant procedure, restoring his ability to speak. Previously, larynx transplants were rare and not an option for those with active cancer. The man is only the third person in the US to undergo a total larynx transplant, and one of the few reported cases worldwide. The surgery was part of a clinical trial to expand the procedure to more patients, including those with cancer. The study aims to improve knowledge and techniques for complex transplants.
